Latin 303 Advanced from Latin Intermediate
Level 200 is Latin reading and conversation (not offered this year)

Programme Outline:

This course presumes a basic familiarity with the forms of the Latin subjunctive, and with the principles of use of the subjunctive mode.  The course will present Advanced Latin grammar, including the many uses of the subjunctive, via reading and engaging with Latin texts from a variety of ages and authors.

This advanced Latin language course is for students who have studied for two years already. New students who have studied at least six terms of the Latin language, or equivalent, are welcome.

Encounter the living Latin language. Learn to pronounce, read and understand Latin from original texts, both ancient and modern. Learn to compose our own sentences. Instructions given in English.

Based on the teaching method of Reginald Foster, there are no vocabulary cards! No paradigms to memorise! Just the living language to understand, write and speak. Working slowly, using simple texts for a clear understanding of the author’s work.
Required book:

Simpson, D.P. – ‘Cassell’s Latin Dictionary’ – (Macmillan, New York 1959) or equivalent, including a small English to Latin section.

Optional book: Ossa Latinitatis Sola Ad Mentem Reginaldi Rationemque – available through Amazon, or through the publisher The Catholic University of America Press.
