Have you ever wondered what caused and propelled the biggest schism in
western Christendom? If so: this is the course for you!

Day 1: The German Reformation:
Late medieval background and possible historical causes of the Reformation. Life and
career of Martin Luther. The German Peasants’ War and the Rural Reformation. The
Urban Reformation. The Princely Reformation. What was the appeal of Luther’s ideas?

Day 2: The English Reformation:
Late medieval church in England. Wycliffe and the Lollards. Henrician Reformation.
London reformers during the 1530’s. Edward VI and Mary: reform and conservative
reaction. The Elizabethan Settlement and 39 Articles.

Day 3: The Swiss Reformation:
Life of Huldrych Zwingli (of Zurich). Differences between Zwingli and Luther. Life of
John Calvin. Symbiotic relationship between Calvin and Geneva. The spread of the
Reformed Tradition. What were the distinctive ideas of Calvin’s theology?


Please bring a packed lunch.  Tea and Coffee provided.
