Programme Outline

Understanding Catholicism is a six week course offering insights into the Roman Catholic Church, its history and development, what it means to be Catholic and the Beliefs, Rituals and Symbols of Catholicism.

The course is ideal for non-Catholic and Catholic parents of children at Catholic schools and for those of any faith or none, who would like to understand what Catholicism is all about, in an informal, relaxed environment.

Jan. 25:  Introduction to the Catholic Church: Religions before Jesus of Nazareth; The life of Jesus. A brief History of the Catholic Church.

Feb. 1:  The Foundations of Faith: What Catholics believe and do and why they live in this way.

Feb. 8:  The Liturgy (Mass): Rituals and Symbols of Catholicism; Holy days, Catholicism as a way of life; The Bible; The Missal; Prayers; The Rosary; Benediction; Saints.

Feb 22:  Women in the Catholic Church: Mary, the Mother of Jesus; Nuns & Sisters; Feminism.

Mar 1:  Seven Sacraments: (1) Baptism; (2) Reconciliation; (3) The Mass & First Holy Communion; (4) Confirmation; (5) Marriage; (6) Holy Orders; (7) Anointing the sick.

Saturday 4 March 10am – 1pm:  The Roles of Priests, Monks, Brothers and Deacons – Religious orders and why the need for celibacy. The differences and similarities with other Christian denominations. Evolving Catholicism in the 21st century and beyond. The Catholic Church’s teachings on: Marriage; Divorce; Contraception; Abortion; Sexual orientation, Euthanasia.

Course Fee: £75 ( £10 per week and £25 for March 4)
